It is helpful to do some research and get some solid information before you head to the water. With the correct information you will start to enjoy your sport from your very first cast, however, if you ‘just head out’ there is a chance of disappointment. Firstly it is recommended that you gather as much information as possible from literature and the internet. But crucially, it is recommended that you also arrange some instruction. This should be specifically for casting techniques.
Casting when is a completely different technique to regular fishing casting. While cramming your information you will come across a lot of casting advice. With good teaching you will learn how to cast so that the fly will follow the fine onto the water. The instructor will show you ho to extend the line out of the reel with one hand, while whipping the pole behind and over your head in order to send the line ‘flying’ to the intended spot.
As with many things in life, information is important, so too is instructions, but ultimately it is practice which will make you good at fly fishing. Once you have learned the technique for casting you will still need to practice to ensure that the fly does get to the correct place. Once casting is mastered, then it is back to gathering information about the most suitable flies to use for the different waters and to maximize number of fish they are hoping to catch.
If you are using dry flies when fly fishing, then you will be able to see where your casting has landed your fly. Because the flies are dry they will sit on the surface of the water. If you are using wet flies, when the fly lands on the desired spot it will sink below the waters surface and will be suitable for fish who are lurking towards the bottom of the water. This is why wet flies are sometimes caused submersible flies.
Once you have all the basics mastered then there is the information which only the experienced angler will incorporate into his fishing trip. This will include the development of the flies and when the fish will expect to come across the flies and bugs you are proposing to use.
